Independent Power Production

Our Power Plant Operator Training Program prepares inividuals for careers in independent hydro power plant operations and maintenance.

The three-part, 18 week course provides entry-level workers with the necessary foundation, technical and hands-on experience to become safe and effective run-of-river power plant operators.

The program was designed by industry with over 20 years experience operating small independent hydro power plants, and partners with Sechelt Indian Band, Regional Power Ltd. and Cloudworks Energy Inc.

As the economy turns increasingly towards green energy, Aboriginal workers are perfectly situated to benefit from new opportunities. First Nations and industry have ratified local impact benefit agreements on many areas open for clean energy production spanning the range from the North Island to the Sunshine Coast and along the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley coastal mountain ranges.

Teaming up with Regional Power, Cloudworks Energy and the BC Transmission Corporation, VanAsep and Sechelt First Nation are able to offer a complete, industry-recognized high-indemand entry-level primer to prepare you for a career in power plant operations and maintenance.


Power Plant Operator Program

The Power Plant Operator Training Program is a three-part, 18-week program with additional practical training designed to provide entry-level workers with the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to become safe and effective Power Plant Operators on run-of-river projects.

Students are first taught the essential skills in a 6-week training course to prepare them for practical work experience. Industry will select and hire foundation program graduates for a 3–6 month practicum for on the job learning and assessment.

The practicum is followed by an additional 12-week technical foundation training to further develop the knowledge, skills, abilities and experience of the students to become fully capable in the operations of a power plant.


Course Prerequisites:

• A demonstrated interest in the power plant operations, and a referral from either a First Nation or power company
• All clients must be 19 years of age or older
• Be able to pass Basic Skill assessment
• Be in good physical condition
